Completed on behalf of Government of Nunavut
Concentric Geoscience was contracted to complete Phase I ESAs of three lots in the Hamlet of Arctic Bay in support of siting a proposed conservation office. Winter weather conditions during the site visits posed a challenge due to limited visibility of the ground surface. Additional interviews were conducted with hamlet elders, other locals, and government representatives to supplement the site visit information. The Phase I ESAs identified potential environmental concerns at each of the three sites associated with current and/or historic uses of either the sites themselves or properties in the immediate surrounding areas. The Concentric Geoscience assessors provided evaluation of the identified potential concerns in consideration of the nature of the identified concern, time elapsed since activities associated with the concern occurred, the geologic/hydrogeologic properties of the sites and surrounding area, and other evidence. Based on the evaluation, one site was determined to have the lowest potential for environmental impact and was recommended as the future location of the conservation office.
